Welcome to Big Lake, Minnesota, 55309

The city of Big Lake is no longer a sleepy little rural community.  Located approximately 45 miles from Minneapolis/St Paul and 28 miles from St. Cloud, it will soon be the home of the Northstar Commuter Rail Line.  This and its close proximity to Interstate 94 have helped the town grow to 9,174 residents in 2006.  Plus another 7,904 in Big Lake Township for a grand total of 17,078.  There have been over 1100 single family homes built in the city since 2000 and several housing assistance programs are offered for first time home buyers and those looking to fix up their current home.  The city's Community Economic Development Department has continuous updates on new businesses and redevelopment projects. 

When completed in 2009, the Northstar Commuter Rail Line will provide service from Big Lake to downtown Minneapolis and connect to Metro Transit's Hiawatha lite-rail system.  Stations and stops for the Northstar are planned in Elk River, Anoka, Coon Rapids and Fridley.
